The world’s largest berry record belongs to pumpkin. Because it is so large, the possibilities for use are quite wide. In fall, people’s minds are overwhelmed by pumpkin pies, pickled pumpkins, soups, stews recipes and more. Ainars Vanags, the winemaker from Līgatne Winery, figured out why not to try to make wine from this berry as well. The process of growing pumpkins is very exciting when you don’t know how many and how big they will grow. Also the process of wine making is captivating while waiting for the taste nuances to open in the drink.

Pumpkins in Latvia can be grown from seed immediately in the garden or first grown at home and then transplanted. The best time for planting in the garden is May. In summer you can watch how pumpkins develop and bloom for several months, but in autumn until first frosts in September or October pumpkins must be harvested.

The second berry used in this wine is sea buckthorn. Its blooms open in spring at the same time when the first leaves start to flourish in April and May. The berries ripen in August, September. Since sea buckthorns are picked by hand, berry pickers should wear gloves to avoid colliding with thorns.

Berries are harvested in the Gauja National Park. Wine fermented and naturally settled for about 12 months. Both berries, the big one and small one, ripen in principle at the same time and their tastes complement each other very well. This wine fits with fish dishes, fruit and desserts. Recommend to use chilled +14˚C. Contains sulphites.
